The Journey of a Thousand Miles Began with a Single Push

Skateboarders are frequently stereotyped as hooligans who like getting into trouble, doing drugs, and vandalising public spaces, but this is not the case. Julia’s goal is to dispel these stereotypes by depicting the community in its entirety from the inside.

Julia has suffered with mental illness in the past, skateboarding has helped her to overcome her despair. Julia aims to portray the flip side of these so-called stereotypes; she intends to exhibit the community’s power, creativity, and individuality when skateboarding. It’s not simply a sport or a pastime for them; it’s freedom, respect, and community.

Julia began this project by  sending out a survey online to the Limerick skateboarding community, which gained 39 responses. The viewer is given an inside glimpse into the community’s personal relationship with skateboarding through a series of nine questions and anonymous replies. This questionnaire was a tremendous source of inspiration for Julia’s work as it allowed her to dive into the intimate ideas and feelings of skateboarders.

Julia continues to connect with the community, utilising digital photography, print, video, sound, and installation to identify and expand on both her community’s and personal resources, strengths, and relationships.
