Imprints of Thought
This project responds to the growing presence of anti-intellectualism within contemporary culture, particularly across politics, technology, and education. Using the writings of Plato and Karl Jaspers, the publication explores how critical thought is increasingly replaced by persuasion, speed, and passive consumption. Structured as a conversation between the two philosophers, the publication connects historical philosophical concerns with present-day issues surrounding misinformation, internet culture, and declining engagement with knowledge.
A key element of the project is the inclusion of an ‘idiot voice’, composed of real anti-intellectual phrases sourced from politics, internet culture and everyday language. Printed on tracing paper overlays, these interruptions physically obscure the main text, symbolising the ways meaningful thought is dismissed or ignored. The reader must actively choose whether to engage with the content beneath or turn past it, making anti-intellectualism a participatory experience rather than simply a topic. Through this interaction, the project aims to provoke reflection on the cultural conditions that discourage deeper thinking and intellectual engagement.
