Grace
O’Brien

Graces’ work explores the tactile messy nature of life. Dissecting what it means to be a living being. Her work centers around the ordinary yet slightly obscure. Moments of transcendence out of touch with reality, but also somehow seeming totally present. The push and pull of reality and fantasy, the allure of the unknown or dreamless state. Her images often cropped creating a sense of unease or mystery, moments of movement that seem eerily stagnant fractured and caught in the between. She examines the connection between people and their bodies, and the loss of connection that can exist. Her work often centers around childhood and the raw messiness attached. Exploring the idea that children can experience and perceive things adults cannot. A connection to another world of sorts, a sight behind the veil that separates imagination and reality. She paints quickly applying thick layers and mixing with oil for fluidity. She paints in response to the uncertain and chaotic emotions that come with being a living being. Her imagery is relatable, capturing fleeting moments of expression and emotion. She gathers images from her own personal life and childhood. While also looking outwards to images in magazines and movies. Her work focusses on human form. She creates snapshots disassembling a memory or a fleeting moment. Each work coming together to tell a story of life.
