Unveiling Traces is my response to the history of the former Good Shepherd Convent, now Limerick School of Art and Design. Once a Magdalene Laundry, this place still holds the memory of the women who lived, labored, and were incarcerated here. Though the outer walls have been opened and the laundry and convent are long gone, the forced silence and hiddenness of these women, whose identities were stripped from them, continue to echo in this place.
My work explores the connection between past and present within physical space. Through photography, embossing, and sheer silk, I aim to highlight and unveil the quiet layers of the building’s past, each with a story to tell.
I wish to acknowledge the highly skilled lacemakers of the Good Shepherd Convent. Their work, though unrecognized individually, played a significant role in preserving the legacy of Limerick Lace. Their lace, which was sold and now scattered around the world, leaves a lasting material trace of their existance and is an important part of Irish craft heritage.
It is my hope that, someday soon, a formal memorial will be placed at this site to honor these women and recognize the history of the Good Shepherd Convent.
Through this work I want to bring light, and to say: We are here now, and we see you. You are not forgotten.
