My Circus, My Monkeys
My collection explores the complex emotions expressed by humans through the narrative of the clown. Clowns are entertainers who use exaggerated silhouettes, bold patterns and humor usually with the purpose of making people laugh. Clowns often personify and take on the attributes of the emotions they are portraying through the the garments that they wear when performing. In the Irish language, when describing how a person feels, they say that the emotion is on them. For example, “Tá áthas orm”, translating to happiness is on me rather than simply saying “I am happy” in English. Connecting these two ideas, I was inspired to create a collection that tells this story of wearing ones emotions.
