Major Feen’ is a collection of works I made based around the band I play in by the same name. The work I am exhibiting aims to create a visual representation of the time and space that we occupy as a band of brothers making art and memories together, told through stories and illustrations.

Illustration using pens and pencils is the base of my work, a manual approach that requires physical connection between the art and the artist, similarly to how acoustic music is made not by electronic amplification, but by the design of the instrument and the physical exertion of the musician.

The attitude of punk and folk sensibilities is a big influence on the aesthetics of my project just as it influences my music. Combining old traditions with fresh ideas and contemporary characters I attempt to make my own punky little folk tales with a do-it-yourself enthusiasm and an embrace of the imperfect and accidental. This mirrors our experience making and performing music, something that can be complex and carefully crafted but is still decorated by incidental features and mistakes.

The title of the band and project ‘Major Feen’ combines a military rank with an Irish traveler term for a man which has made its way into the vernacular language of Limerick and other parts of Munster. This marks the art work with themes of militarism, masculinity and rebellion as well as a sense of the extraordinary.
