Why Are You So Tired?
I am exploring the feeling of restlessness by asking a simple question: Why are you so tired? The honest answer often hides deep in the subconscious, where anxiety, overthinking, guilt, and stress create invisible barriers to rest. In current times, unavoidable external and internal pressures shape a state of chronic unrest.
I’m drawn to the moments just before sleep, when distractions fade and I’m left alone with spiraling thoughts. It’s in this liminal space, where the mind races and the body longs to let go, that I find inspiration. Through endurance, comfort, and distraction, these barriers may momentarily dissolve—but true rest remains elusive.
My work explores various sources of unrest: overthinking, substance use, family and social pressures, media saturation, and even astrology—used as a symbolic language for understanding the subconscious. Astrology, in this context, becomes a tool for making sense of how we think, feel, and search for meaning.
I share confessions of my own restless mind, but also my mother’s and strangers’. I collected personal entries from old journals and in note apps. My Mother shared her worries with me and allowed me to share them with an audience. Included are anonymous responses to a survey asking about anxieties and worries that cause restlessness. By showcasing sincerity, a space is created for deep similarities to be known and connections to be made.
I explore belief systems, not necessarily religious, but rooted in connection, meaning, and hope. Coming from a non-religious background, I find faith in the universe, in human relationships, in ancient symbols like the triskele of Newgrange, in music, fate, karma, and manifestation.
Ultimately, my work is a meditation on the tension between unrest and rest, and the pursuit for peace within it.
‘Endless Energy’, 2023, sewn collage of linocut second hand fabric pieces and assemblages of shells, rocks, beads, safety pins, bottle caps, threads, wire and buttons, edition 1/7
My piece, “Endless Energy”, is inspired by the engravings found in Newgrange and petroglyphs in Central Asia for their depictions of prehistoric, environmental symbols. These cultures understood the relationship between nature and humanity. So to show the healing ability in nature, I used second-hand materials to create my collaged print.
