Ruin

Ruins is a body of work that depicts the urban landscape. It is an exploration of themes of architecture, ideology, and power. The project is concerned with documenting the failure of urban planning, which has altered the Limerick skyline for many years. This led to monolithic concrete structures being littered across the city. The asinine nature of the Celtic Tiger that paved the way for the construction of these monumental structures has caused them to become scars on the urban landscape. The remains have decayed and oxidised over the years. This degradation has caused the structures to become unusable and turned them into contemporary ruins. These functionless brutalist constructs are left to stand in desolate wastelands as a bleak reminder to the people of Limerick the hardship caused by the recession.

Ruins connect us to our history, be it hundreds of years ago or our recent past. This project is concerned with the contemporary ruins of Limerick city and the emotions they evoke within me. The Dublin Rd. buildings had a dominant presence in this project. The imposing towers and the emotional and sensory response that occurred while documenting this space has dramatically impacted the project.
