Motherland/ Родина

My degree show piece is in two parts; a large scale collage and an interactive display of 5 zines. In the collage, I aim to encompass the feeling of tainted nostalgia from watching somewhere that once felt like home crumble from the inside, using a critical eye to see its negative aspects rather than clinging to an idealised past. The piece combines characters from fairytales which I once used to reconnect with my roots, with images that reflect the current culture of war and dehumanisation.

The zines are a more detailed exploration of my concept; critiquing hyper-masculinity, misogyny, queerphobia and environmental issues that prevail in Russia and how they reflect its’ sense of ownership over the vulnerable, which has been fostered by colonialism and imperialism over time. I use collages and drawings that often incorporate elements of Russian folk art and classical painting as I once used these to reconnect to the culture which I now feel distant from. These are accompanied by excerpts from essays and articles which I gathered while researching in order to provide context and education on these issues.
