Saoirse’s body of work has aims to explore a personal view of femininity and self-perception. She has approached this through the use of self-portraiture, layered figures and the symbolic objects such as the corset or lilies. Using a mix of oil pastels and oil paints, her work has aims to display the doubt of how one is choosing to represent themselves. She draws from self-references of images, either from her own phone or digital camera, to explore the conflict between sensuality and objectification.
Saoirse’s work examines the fine line between the feeling of empowerment in one’s body and the feeling of being reduced by it. The use of varying shades of pink and red, represent the traditional roles of femininity that women have been expected to to fall into, while the use of the corset symbolizes the restriction that women have faced throughout history. The motif of the phone is to act as a modern day counterpart, reflecting the modern pressure of how women are expected to represent themselves on social media.
