Mairead Conway

Generation To Generation

Mairead Conway is a mixed media artist who works predominantly with textiles. This project is an exploration of both sides of her family history, focusing on skills that get passed down generation to generation. Her project focuses on the women in her family and all the skills they taught her.

The project consists of tapestries that combine some found material and some material that she has been collected in charity shops. Mairead experimented with dying processes to create some of the colours in the textiles.

The figures she creates in her final year project are loosely based around religious images. This element of her project portrays the historical injustice that women faced at the hands of the Catholic church.

The emphasis on hands is intentional, to symbolize the immense importance of the hands in the art of craftsmanship. The large scale hands emphasize the tactile connection between the creator and the craft, showcasing the strength, skill, and dedication that hands contribute to the process of making.
Mairead aims to highlight the skills that go into creating various types of handcrafts. All the skills that are used in this project are adapted to fit Mairead’s own personal style.
