Crossing Bodies

The climate challenges that we face are largely human induced that have damaged the natural environment and depleted animal populations and habitats. James McLoughlin’s work centers around the clash of human and nonhuman, focusing on the long and imbalanced relationship we have had with the once ubiquitous eel. In this exhibition the eel acts as a cypher for wilderness that is both in revolt and decline within our consumerist culture. Once an important resource, now on several international critically endangered lists, McLoughlin observes the absurdity and imposed systems indicative of human activity that interfere with the eel’s existence as a fellow species.
