MY WORK EXPLORES THE NOTION OF BELONGING. GROWING UP BETWEEN TWO CULTURES, I AM CONSTANTLY NAVIGATING THE IN-BETWEEN.
MY SITUATION IS NOT UNIQUE. DISTINCT AND DISPARATE CULTURES CONTINUOUSLY COME INTO CONTACT WITH ONE ANOTHER. THIS LEADS TO AMALGAMATION, COEXISTENCE AND APPROPRIATION.
AS WE MOVE, WE TAKE PIECES OF OUR PREVIOUS CULTURAL EXPERIENCES WITH US, WE GATHER THE FAMILIAR AND ADD THE UNFAMILIAR, SYMBOLS SHIFTING AND CHANGING MEANING IN DIFFERENT PLACES. CULTURE REGENERATES ITSELF AND EVOLVES WITH THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF THE UNIVERSE.
THIS WORK IS AN ODE TO A FUTURE EVOLUTION, IDEALISTICALLY HARMONIOUS OR CHAOTICALLY CONFLICTING.
Within this work and in my practice, I avoid the use of cobalt and heavy use of other oxides, for ethical reasons concerning sourcing and mining, especially in Congo.
