From the Earth to the Cloud

This project set out to explore ways of embedding Education for Sustainable Development concepts into the art practice of the students at Senior Cycle. It provided opportunities for students to challenge attitudes to consumerism, waste management in their own environment and respond in a creative way to these issues that affect everyone. The students took part in a guided visit to Limerick Docks, undertook an investigation of school waste management system and explored the work of artists who address Education for Sustaiable issues through their work. The students made molds of the most common item found in the bin, the plastic bottle, by casting multiples of different types of bottles in clay which were supsequently bisque fired. They then identified an appropiate location wihtin the school to locate a collaboratively designed installation. During the design and installation process they conducted interviews to record the reactions of staff and others students, to both the topic under investagation and their findings. Images of the process and background research work under taken by the students was uploaded to the school website and streamed on monitors within the school, extending the audience and presenting of the project in its entirety.
