Craft Education – Traditional Hand Built Ceramics

Clay in relation to pottery is seen as a throwers discipline. In relation to craft, it assumes a more traditional method of making, and in relation to ceramics, clay is viewed as a method of creating modern art. Making in clay and the processes utilised can enable separate identities amongst makers. The project Craft Education — Traditional Hand Built Ceramics aimed to enlighten students to the different layers and identities of ceramic artists. Students explored the traditional method of making in a contemporary classroom environment. This body of work offered the students the opportunity to develop self-awareness through real time documentation, with the aim of establishing good reflective practice.  Students used reflective journals and an online digital platform to creatively support their ceramic experiments and critical thinking about process and outcomes thorughout. Considering today’s fast paced culture and society, the methodical time and concentration required to develop both the ceramic works and thoughtful reflection upon these, aided in enriching students understanding and appreciation for time – and time worthy exercises. To encouraged the growth of skill in also distinguishing between quality and quantity, mass production and unique designs.
