Concept Development Skills through a Sketchbook: Exploring ideas through a sketchbook by investigating a historical location to create paintings which use concept development skills
The purpose of this research project was to help students develop ideas using a sketchbook. As the sketchbook is an important aspect of my practice, I hoped to give students an insight into how an artist uses this tool during the creative process. The subject matter was based on a field trip to the historical location of Charleville Castle where students began developing ideas which incorporated narratives and features within the castle. Modelling of the artist-teacher practice was a teaching strategy used through the project. This consisted of how a sketchbook can be used to develop ideas using elements such as photography, drawing, artist research and annotation. A final painting was created which reflected developed ideas while also exploring paint using various techniques.
