Can Comic books support and develop visual and collaborative learning in the classroom?
Inspired by the work of Artist Dave McKean and his mixed media illustration on Batman’s Arkham Asylum. This project looked at whether or not a collaborative comic book could improve visual learning within the art classroom. Students created a comic book based in their school. Firstly, they created and developed characters, discussed the plot, and engaged in writing a collaborative narrative. This process led to the creation of large storyboards where the students engaged with each other, learning to compromise and worked as a team to illustrate their story.
Students experimented with mixed media and digital processes to create panels and backgrounds for their individual pages. This formed the basis, which enhanced student’s knowledge and understanding of materials and digital manipulation.
Student ownership and voice were integral to this project and process; this is reflected in the high quality of the work.
