Instigation

My work is a reaction to humanity’s endless intrusion into the lives and habitats of animals.

The bee is my exponent. These vital pollinators are just one victim of the habitat loss and toxic pesticide use that signifies our global greed and mass production. I focus on the bumblebee, a bee species often overlooked due to our prioritisation of the honeybee and its economic value. Even within bee species we prioritise economy over ecology.

My work explores these concerns through three different means. Detailed drawings emphasise the beauty of bumblebees, often unseen because of their minuscule size. Seed bombs are an incitement to change. An invitation to plant – whole or scattered – and so recreating areas for these pollinators to feed. Finally, the installation brings attention to the detail and beauty of form that is created when copious individual bees work together as a single unit in the nest environment.
