#heary_hairy: Huns

Ella’s art practice is based off themes of Gender and Media, particularly dissecting the taboo of female body hair on social media. She investigates how the censorship of Instagram’s rules and regulations conform to societies perception of how women should appear hairless. In doing so, she wants to interrogate these gendered restricted censorships and challenge the way people perceive women’s bodies in both media and social media by depicting women in her work with hair on their bodies. Ella constructs these images through appropriating women’s clothing companies Instagram accounts and applying human hair on to these images. The way she presents these images with the hair flourishing out of these women’s smooth bikini lines is intended to directly confront the audiences desensitized perception of how a woman’s body should “naturally” look. Ella’s installation plans involve incorporating the format of Instagram to how advertisements display their images in public spaces. Ella’s idea for this art work is not to shame anyone who chooses to shave their body hair but to advocate that women should not feel pressured to shave their hair if they do not wish to.
