Archetype

Mc Clurgs work is concerned with the Archetype of the Goddess. Archetypes exist within us from birth and through our cultural collectives, we develop their meaning. Mc Clurg explores how archetypes are fundamental channels from our conscious world to the unconscious world of our ancestors. Her work is the result of materials in action – poured latex and foam, cinched metal, and dripped wax. The work invokes a landscape of intuition. It is a dark fearful organic form and the scale of it makes it more terrifying and dreamlike. From a psychological perspective, this sculptural work is representative of the dark aspect of the Goddess. The work acts as a trigger for an unconscious instinctual reaction. This then allows the audience to connect with the archetypal symbols or motifs within their individual self and the collective unconscious. We can sense that something is out of balance within our psyche, but we can collectively return its balance by connecting to the archetypes.
