The Uninhabitable Earth

“Climate change isn’t something happening here or there but everywhere, and all at once”.

Critical, haunting and provocative, The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells addresses the substantial issue of the climate crisis with appropriate urgency and doesn’t waste time disguising the severity of the situation we have found ourselves in. It is a harsh but necessary wake-up call. The cover of this book needed to perfectly encapsulate the sheer importance of the issues being discussed, in addition to mirroring the urgent tone of voice utilised in the book, and capturing the attention of – and appealing to – a wide audience.

The iceberg illustrated in the final book cover design plays on the idea of appearance versus reality. Appearances are often deceptive, as is noticeably the case with the climate crisis: it is a topic often brushed over or somewhat sugarcoated in the news and as a result, there is a collective opinion that it is an issue which is under control, when, in reality, this is far from the truth.
