‘Sublime Plaza’ is a conceptual space containing eight buildings, each designed to evoke a Sublime reaction. The buildings are each based on a facet of the Sublime, which I have deduced from an intensive period of research. The eight facets of the Sublime are Scale, Time, Death, Cosmos, Divinity, Objecthood, the Void and Cataclysm.
Each building in ‘Sublime Plaza’ is designed in accordance with one of these categories and presented at 1:1000 scale. The buildings are made through a process of layered mold making into which plaster is poured. The architectural qualities of each structure are inspired by multiple styles of architecture from ancient Greek and Mesopotamian all the way up to and including brutalism and minimalism.
‘Cantos (Tablets for Sublime Plaza)’ is a series of eight cast plaster tablets, each containing a composed verse written in accordance with the same eight facets of the Sublime. The verses detail abstract first-person encounters with the Sublime facets. While each verse can be considered individually, there exists a narrative throughout the cantos depicting the relationship between a prophet and a sculptor. The prophet, who is dead, recalls memories of these encounters and how he and the sculptor began the construction of their ‘Sublime Plaza’. The prophet and the sculptor, which are two embodiments of my own psyche, can be seen as 1:1000 scale people, standing by each model building, making their way through their plaza together.
