Skin is a Landscape : Mapping Generational Femininity

This work explores the emotional and physical experience of living in one’s own skin, with a particular focus on acne, inherited beauty standards, and the weight of generational femininity. Through a wearable latex sculpture—a kind of “second skin”—I visualized the tension between protection and exposure. The latex material was pierced with hand-stitched beads and pearls, referencing the sharp visibility of acne and the inherited rituals of beautification.

While these embellishments may suggest attempts at ornamentation, they speak more to the marks we carry—both chosen and inherited. The stitched, bullseye-like patterns evoke the constant gaze and scrutiny directed at female bodies, while also reflecting the cyclical nature of beauty ideals passed down through generations.

Photography and installation elements further expand this exploration, treating the body as a landscape of identity, vulnerability, and transformation. The work invites viewers to confront how society views skin—flawed or flawless—and to reflect on their own inherited perceptions of worth and appearance.
