Return to Áine

Return to Áine is a curated hypothesis of the data I have collected. My constant inspiration is The Shannon as it is my source of knowledge. I have collected materials, memories, facts and feelings from its banks. The base for my piece is a bedsheet from my family home, painted with dyes and pigments harvested from the river and urban areas around it. This piece is an attempt at reattaching myself to natural spaces, something to fill the cracks between humanity and the dirt.

My work and primary research are closely related. The methods I am investigating to make my work is exactly the kind of information I would include in it. Additionally, I feel a connection to my heritage through my love of codices and finding ways to display knowledge. Our ancestors treasured knowledge of the land, some of which we still use today. The geography of our nation is embedded in many of our myths and stories. In Ireland, codices were priceless items, continuously being added to and never fully completed as it is passed down across generations. I believe you can carry everything you need on your back, and even more, if it is written down. The wilderness is only wild if you know nothing about it.
