Cantonese Cultural Experience Centre
This project is inspired by a personal Cantonese heritage and aims to share the richness of Cantonese culture with a wider audience. Growing up surrounded by Cantonese traditions, food, and language fostered a strong personal connection to the cultural roots, forming the foundation of the design approach. The project acts as both a celebration and a means of cultural preservation, translating personal memory and identity into a shared public experience.
Located at 5 Davis Street, Limerick, the project occupies the former Railway Hotel. Constructed in the 1800s, the building is a Protected Structure within the city of Limerick and was historically known as a popular gathering place for hurling supporters. Following its closure in 2016 for economic reasons, the building now presents an opportunity for adaptive reuse that respects its heritage while introducing a new cultural purpose.
The building is reimagined as a Cultural Experience Centre celebrating Cantonese heritage through food, history, and sensory engagement. The proposal combines multiple cultural functions under one roof, including dual restaurant spaces serving authentic dim sum and Cantonese cuisine, a heritage museum gallery, a tea tasting room, and a traditional Chinese dessert academy. Each space encourages interaction, learning, and cultural appreciation while offering visitors a meaningful and memorable experience.
The central design concept is inspired by Chinese tea culture, particularly the movement of tea leaves as they unfurl and drift through water. This fluid motion informs the spatial language of the interior through organic forms and subtle curves that create softness, balance, and continuity. The design establishes a calm spatial rhythm that encourages contemplation and invites visitors to slow down, engage their senses, and immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere of Cantonese tradition.
