Coastal Marker

My work focuses not on the overwhelming scale of the landscape, but on its composition – honing in on sedimentary rocks, resulting from the layering of sediments over time. Dynamic inertia of pressure, weight and compression created linear and sponge-like features, both visual and textural. These activities froze in rock and over time, through erosion, created a magical but harsh place. I explore these features by creating sculptural forms where ceramic material and process examine the “laying” and compression of the rock formation process. Rather than make scale copies of the cliffs, mirroring shapes and lines exactly as seen, I create abstract sculptural forms that are visually and materially linked to geological processes and reference the impressive scale of this place.
