Nikita Hickey is a Carlow-born artist, studying Fine Art Painting. Working mainly in the medium of paint Hickey’s current practice consists of large scale colourful and gestural abstract paintings. These paintings are bright and playful and the gestural marks she favours are influenced by the movement of the figure as well as the by the surrounding space.
Hickey has always been greatly influenced by the figure, particularly the movement of the body. She represents the body through gestural forms, taking reference from many Abstract Expressionist painters including Amy Sillman and Laura Owens. Though the course of her studio practice, Hickey aims to create a sense of colour, movement, and space through these loose and playful paintings on both sketchbook and canvas.
As part of her practice Hickey documents her thought process in small A5 sized sketchbooks. Here is where she creates the initial plans for her larger paintings on canvas. Using materials such as Acrylic, Gouache, paint markers, and pen, she creates loose lines and shapes, which help her achieve a busy composition. These first drawings allow her to develop larger scale works on canvas.
