Bannatyne Mill

This project shows the adaptive reuse of Bannatyne Mill, a historic industrial building situated on Dock Road in Limerick, and proposes it’s transformation into a contemporary creative hub focused on craft, learning, and community engagement. Once an important part of the city’s industrial history, the mill is reimagined as a vibrant cultural destination that celebrates both heritage and innovation. The proposal retains the building’s strong industrial character while introducing new functions that encourage creativity, collaboration, and public interaction.

The design strategy carefully organises a variety of spaces throughout the building to support different creative activities and community uses. The ground floor contains a retail area that promotes locally made products and welcomes visitors into the space. The first floor is dedicated to a pottery workshop, providing facilities for ceramic production and education. Jewellery workshops occupy the second floor, offering makers flexible studio environments for design and craftsmanship. The third floor functions as an exhibition space where artists and makers can present their work to the public. A flexible community space on the fourth floor supports events, learning programmes, and social activities, encouraging interaction between visitors and local residents. The fifth floor accommodates a café and bar overlooking the River Shannon, creating a social destination with panoramic views across the city.

Through the adaptive reuse of Bannatyne Mill, the project aims to reconnect the building with the surrounding community and re-establish it as an active and meaningful part of Limerick’s cultural landscape. By combining preservation with contemporary intervention, the proposal demonstrates how historic industrial architecture can support sustainable urban regeneration and cultural development. The project emphasises accessibility, creativity, and social connection while ensuring the building remains economically and environmentally relevant for future generations. Ultimately, the design presents Bannatyne Mill as a landmark destination that strengthens Limerick’s creative identity today.
