Obumbratio

Obumbratio, latin for cast shadow, or shading. This project explores the human condition through the use of materials such as charcoal to shade, obscure and distort the figure. The human figure is central to my work. I source my images through television and film scenes, translating the Mise En Scene through the visual language of fine art and transforming them to comment on themes of isolation, separation and disconnection. Drawing, to me is an anchor to the present moment, a way to make the conscious observations and perceptions of the individual tangible. My daily practice involves observing life, learning how the eye sees what is in front of it, the rules of perspective and lighting that come together to create a whole visual representation. This knowledge allows me to obfuscate, distort and redirect light on the canvas, contrasting the silhouettes of people with the environments they inhabit, highlighting an ethereal space that could only exist on the canvas and in the mind. It is this direct correlation between the lived experience and the painted world that interests me, the canvas is the support used to offer a window into the space between them
