Growing up in the West of Ireland in the Internet age I may be one of the last to experience the custom of the ‘wren boys’ and ‘straw men.’
I re-visit Internet phenomenon through the lens of traditional folk-style storytelling and create fictional characters through costume and set production. I explore how my experience of folklore and myth engages with the vernacular narratives that are processed daily by digital culture.
One character in particular is focused on for this work. A nameless creature in a hessinan onsie who seems part wren boy and part cosplayer. A figure trapped in an unidentifable mutable space unsure how this came to be and unable to remember anything outside this strange dimension.
Strange visions and dreams appear to the creature as they seek clues to their past and advice on how to survive in this unknown world. Now tropes of Irish folklore are personifed as hybrids, humanoid creatures unsettled by the digital age.
