Ballet has fascinated me for a long time. The graceful movements, the seeking of absolute elegance, make me think that pure aesthetic is often underestimated. Ballet makes the human body move in ways it was not made to move; professional dancers risk permanent injuries, even disabilities, and face a harsh, highly competitive environment, yet, like us visual artists, they keep going for the love of the art.
Deux isn’t just a piece about ballet, it’s also a story about being different. Protagonist Terry isn’t just a deer girl, she is also potentially a PoC, Jewish, or autistic, like me. Her antlers aren’t necessarily antlers, they might also be a hijab, a wheelchair, or a foreign passport. This struggle of fitting into a “normal” world while still not abandoning one’s differences is something that a lot of people can identify with.
