My work explores aspects of personality and emotion which I feel are often difficult to define and express openly on a day-to-day basis. This theme is explored through various levels of release, playing with the viewers access through the contrasting notions of obscurity and exposure. I became interested in the seeming parallel between military paraphernalia and fetish apparel – two distinct and yet important expressions of masculinity. These two themes have become intertwined to inform my exploration of fetish and personality as topics of visual conversation.
Parian busts that don different expressive masks provide the opportunity to visually explore these ever-evolving thoughts and feelings. The expressive qualities of material provide a visual language for communicating the obscure, where tentative masking toys with public unveiling.
