True Blue
True Blue is a design proposal that transforms Bealick Mills, an 18th century corn mill in Macroom, Cork, into a wellness centre focused on mental health and emotional wellbeing. The project respects the building’s historical and industrial character while reimagining it as a calm and welcoming environment for individuals experiencing anxiety and depression.
Set within a landscape shaped by flowing water and strong connections to nature, the vacant four storey mill provides an ideal foundation for adaptive reuse. The concept is inspired by the movement and structure of the water mill, using circulation and flow to guide people through the space in a gradual journey. The layout creates a natural progression between public, social, and private spaces across each floor level. Water is used as a metaphor for release, recovery, and renewal, reflecting the changing nature of human emotions throughout the design.
The goal of True Blue is to provide an alternative to traditional clinical settings through therapeutic and human centred design. The proposal includes hydrotherapy spaces for stress relief, counselling and talk therapy rooms for emotional support, and shared spaces that encourage social connection. A café and communal kitchen located across different floor levels promote interaction and communication between users in a stigma free environment.
The project creates a restorative environment where individuals can step away from daily pressures and reconnect with nature through the use of textures and materials that create comfort and stability throughout the space.
