'Where My Shadow Still Lingers' /’ ‘Там, Где Осталась Моя Тень’/ ‘Tur, Kur Palika Mana ēna’ / ‘Áit Ina Chonaíonn Mo Scáth’

My work explores the themes of Memory, Displacement and Nostalgia through documentary photography. As an immigrant living in Ireland for nearly two decades, I am drawn back to my homeland, Latvia. Returning not just to places, but to the feelings and fragments of a life that once was. The title ‘Where my shadow still lingers’ reflects this sense of presence in absence. I walk through familiar landscapes where only a trace of my former self remains.
I photograph slowly and intuitively, allowing each place to speak before I raise my camera. These images are quiet meditations on reconnection and loss. My late mother is deeply embedded in my work through the memories we shared and the archival photographs I incorporate into the series.
Working in black & white lets me strip the image to its essence, removing distraction and inviting reflection. I combine digital photography with archival material to create a visual dialogue between the past and present, self and shadow, home and away.
