In this body of work, artist, Stephen Griffin explores the themes of the male psyche, male mental health, the stereotypes, and the anxieties associated with young men in society. Using oil paint, he reconstructs these concepts in dreamlike, surreal compositions with predominantly male figures to subtly show the unspoken dysfunctionality beneath. The feminine pink colour palette counteracts the stereotypes of how the male is perceived. He uses the paint to provoke the thoughts of the viewer.
The descending of the figures exposes the less palatable realities of the troubled male psyche and uncovers some of the truths behind the energetic, surreal dreamlike scenes. The figures serve to perpetuate the notion of deeper, far more troubling male issues which lurk beneath the puritanical exterior.
