Making a Mark / Permission to Wonder

For this unit of learning, first year students engaged in a series of contextualized, experimental drawing classes inspired by the work of contemporary artist Arno Kramer. They explored how the artist approached making work, and how he creates (deliberately awkward)  compositions incorporating figurative symbols, abstract marks, and patterns. As part of this the students compiled a series of questions to ask the artist about his practice and his answers, combined with the students’ personal research, informed the process.

Materials explored included charcoal, pencil, watercolour, mono print, and collage. There was an emphasis on creating ‘resistance’ in the work through the contrast of figuration and abstraction but also through the contrast of materials (and material use) such as watercolour washes against strong graphic lines. The students were encouraged to work intuitively and to embrace accidental marks and mistakes as part of the process. Three key components of this project were the use of enquiry-based strategies to explore the artists’ work, considering artistic process and engaging in playful practice.
