Shades of the Prison-House Begin to Close
My practice revolves around themes of childhood – specifically exploring fort and den building. I see these temporary structures as important pathways to psychological and social development, an initial venture towards independence. My work is driven by play. I hope to transfer this experience of play onto the viewer by creating immersive environments, with which they can actively explore. I am intrigued with how the play we engage in as children can shape the adults we become, particularly how it forms our understanding of gender and identity. I have used the book Peter Pan as a source to accumulate a body of visual imagery with which to explore these topics. Childhood is an inherently personal experience, however classic children’s stories such as Peter Pan become a shared experience for many. Whether experienced through books, films or stage adaptations these stories have not only reflected but have been used to influence a societies’ values. These elements from books and from my own childhood experiences come together to create a multi-faceted work that explores the experience of growing up.
