Awakening

‘The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, incredibly magnificent world in itself.’ – Henry Millar

My chance encounter with a Rusty Tussock Caterpillar drew me into just such a fascinating world. The unexpected and somewhat unnatural appearance of such colour amid the grey clay warranted primary investigations of colour, pattern, texture and form. Its curious and mesmerising appearance combined with its undulating locomotion drove the concept of investigating the extraordinary and the mundane through experimentation, manipulation and modification of materials and processes.

My work, drawing inspiration from the caterpillar, seeks to engage so as to awaken a sense of curiosity and wonder that invites closer observation and interaction.
