Rebecca Conway

Anna

Rebecca Conway’s practice explores the materiality of surface, drawing reference from the body and skin as
a basis for her work. The artist works with photography, video, sculpture and audio, examining, reinterpreting and simulating the body’s experience.

Conway investigates the stigma and lived experiences associated with having a child born out of wedlock, speci cally during the decade of the 1980’s. The piece conveys the struggle stemming from contradicting the religious views in Ireland at the time. This is portrayed through a multi- media installation involving a combination of digital and sculptural pieces confronting the perceived shame and portrayal of women from this period.

Extracts from an interview with individuals who have experienced
this guides us through the piece. The visuals portray subtle clues within this person’s body language, expressions, and tone of voice while reflecting on their past, giving them the voice they never had.
