The concept of my collection developed from a series of aerial photographs by the photographer Tom Hegan. The images are of coal mines in Germany and the damage caused to the land as a result. Coal mining has swallowed nearly half a million acres of Germany’s land – including villages, forests, and roads. The ideas of mining and burning coal lead to the development of technical samples, burning fabrics, and exploring alternative fabrics, such as recycled coal bags. I designed my collection to show the process of coal burning and breaking down by focusing on heat damage and developing large panels on the body to create a slice affect. The collection is unisex with an oversized, relaxed tailored silhouette.
