Alice

My graduate collection was inspired by my childhood love of fantasy and fiction novels. I choose to base my work on my favourite fairy-tale, Alice in Wonderland. I remain very much enchanted by Lewis Carroll’s writings of Alice and her encounters with the nonsense, over the top characters, and the larger the life circumstances in which she finds herself falling into. Focusing on this novel as a theme has bought back a whimsical sense of childlike imagination and freedom to my work.

My shape and textures were highly influenced by free hand drawings I did of some of the characters and items featured in the story. These drawings created an eccentric and playful silhouette which allowed me to capture the essence of shrinking and growing that Alice faces throughout the story and bring this playful concept into the garments. Many of my pattern pieces and fabric placement were influenced by the oddness the novel incapsulates of Alice’s movements throughout the story. My fabric and colour choice was based on capturing the boisterous tone of Alice and the characters she encounters by using a mixture of patterns, lace, and colours.
