Butter Wouldn’t Melt
Nabla Furey undertakes a form of confessional art in her practice as she focuses on an internal revelation of the private self. Through treating the work as a sketchbook, she intimately analyses the artist, the artist’s subjects, the space around her as well as her experiences and emotions in a quick and carefree manner. As with her sketchbooks the artwork is never complete, and a sense of adaption is present as she reworks and adds layers constantly, which mirrors the change of individual and social activity in adjustment to cultural surroundings. Sexual identity, self-awareness, and the depiction of a young woman in an artistic community and the challenges that’s present themselves are but some, of the underlying key themes. Furey adopts a bright, vibrant colour palette and an array of mixed media to create individual singular pieces that can also work collectively as an installation portraying an energetic personal narrative.
