‘Marie Antoinette tries to blend royal exclusiveness and private freedom, and turns fashion into a battlefield for the expression of her subjectivity.’– Pamela Flores, Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body, and Culture
My inspiration for this collection was Marie Antoinette and her opulent and decadent lifestyle in the palace of Versailles. Marie Antoinette had a young, innocent, playful, romantic essence. Her lavish life was full of luxury and opulence. However this was shadowed by the orders by the French Court to fulfill her part as dauphin by giving her body over to the ladies at court for the rituals of dressing but also to the nation for the production of an heir. She goes from being the French courts’ sophisticated innocent dauphin to a free, playful, romantic, powerful Queen which is represented by gathered curtain drape that goes from being completely covering the body to being pulled back and revealed. The shapes are draped on the stand with feminine undergarments. The essence of Marie Antoinette’s luxury and decadence are portrayed through the fabrics of brocade, silk satin, tulle, twill, glass organza, and taffeta.
