Mary Mc Cormack

Palimpsest na hÉireann

Mary’s work, is multi-disciplinary utilising painting, drawing, sculpture and poetry. Working in mixed media, Mary depicts how the ideologies, techniques and strategies of the Colonizer sought the eradication of Ireland’s national and cultural identity. Mary’s work bears testament to these facts and portrays how shadows and marks from the past remain in the present. Acknowledgement and healing of these wounds are portrayed, both through the use of symbols and materials.

This series inspired through the uncovering of pottery shards on family land at Newhall during land combing, a process which is central to Mary’s artistic practice. Inspiration is also drawn from the Irish president Michael D. Higgin’s address for Machnamh 100. Ireland is symbolised by the Irish Mantel, an egalitarian garment- forbidden under colonial rule through the Statute of Kilkenny -1367, laws laid down to control and ‘civilize’ the Irish indigenous culture, language, customs and identity.
