CHAPTER

Located within the historic Granary building in Limerick City, ‘Chapter’ is futuristic space
with the vibrant energy of Japanese manga cafes. The building dates to 1787, originally
serving as a storage facility for grain, but over time, its purpose evolved, accommodating
various uses.
Japanese manga cafes include a casual reading space, short-term stay accommodation, a
place to order food, drink and occasionally a gaming aspect. ‘Chapter’ is a bold
reimagination of the traditional manga cafe concept, magnified on a grand scale across all
four floors of the Granary building. Each floor is dedicated to a distinct aspect of the manga
café experience.
The concept for this project comes from the dynamic aesthetics of manga graphic novels
and more specifically the bold framing of images and the contrast between the brightly
coloured covers and the black and white pages. ‘Chapter’ embarks on a journey of visual
storytelling by using the concept to transition the users from a greyscale world into a
kaleidoscope of colours, inspiring the users to be creative.
‘Chapter’ aspires to be more than just a physical space; it is a vibrant community hub
where enthusiasts share their passion and forge meaningful connections.
