Komorebi

In my work I aim to explore the interplay of light, shadow, and memory through printmaking, sound, and photography. Derived from the Japanese word translating to “sunlight that is filtered through leaves of trees” creates a visual and sensory experience often associated with peace and serenity. This project combines etchings and phytograms of Irish plants as well as Polaroids capturing fleeting tree shadows. The use of analogue technology was an important aspect in creating a more personal and nostalgic quality in my work. My prints are accompanied by field recordings overlayed with a light-to-sound device—also named Komorebi— which utilizes sensors to translate natural light and shadows into sound then processing those signals to generate musical notes and soundscapes. Complemented by use of botanical imagery, I aim to investigate connections between the Irish landscape and nostalgia, that is both deeply personal to me and universally resonant in many.
