'Abyss' A/W '19

‘Abyss’ is a menswear collection inspired by a painting called ‘Deluge’ by Anne-Louis Girodet in 1806. It depicts a scene of high tension, of a man fighting to save his family from a flood. The flood represents the social upheaval of the time in France under Napoleon’s reign.

The textiles created for this collection are a tactile representation of the artists emotional response, focusing on desperation and tension.

The macrame symbolises the tension and tight grip of the father desperately gripping his family. The digital prints embody the rapid, stormy waters.  The androgynous shapes highlight the sensitivity in the father’s eyes as he fears for the lives of his loved ones.

AWNY as a designer is captivated by the subjective mind and its response to environmental stimulants. This collection is her response to the ‘Deluge’ which still hangs majestically in the Louvre. She created this collection using a unique perspective which now in turn could inspire a whole new direction of creative responses.
