Monotype Collaboration- FF Nort Specimen

This project was a collaboration with Monotype London and required creating a type specimen for the typeface FF Nort by Jörg Hemker. The typeface is based on Transport, the typeface used in British Road signage and so has a strong affiliation with travel. Due to this affiliation I chose to use the wide range of glyphs and interesting letterforms to create a map.

I began by melding the letterforms together to create abstract shapes resembling roads. I used the wide-ranging glyphs of FF Nort to illustrate the flora and fauna along the way. In this way I created a whimsical road map.

To further illustrate what this font could do, I chose to add text. I chose the poem Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr Suess as it is a poem that explores travel as well as whimsy which is introduced in the form of abstraction.

Like a map this specimen folds down and has information on both sides with one side showing the abstract map and the second demonstrating the various styles and glyphs of FF Nort. This specimen is, overall, a fun and interactive piece and I thoroughly enjoyed working on it.
