AS A MAN

The gay man challenges the heterosexual male stereotype. Society’s perception of a gay man can differ in comparison to their heterosexual counterparts. As their masculine ideals are comprised in favor of a more feminine image. My work addresses gender roles among gay men. These gender roles are masculine and feminine stereotypes. The confrontational nature of these large-scale paintings combined with the cold uneasy colour palette brings about an unavoidable sense of immediacy regarding gay issues and its struggle towards acceptance. My work also evokes personal opinions amongst the viewer’s regarding these issues. My painting addresses difficulties regarding equality within today’s Irish society concerning same sex marriage. They also question the viewer’s stance on the topic.
