Piecemeal

I have always been fascinated by houses that have been abandoned and left in disrepair. These houses that were once inhabited and the discarded objects that lie within elicit a feeling of loss; the loss of life and habitation from what was a decorated family home and the loss of function as the crumbling building can no longer provide the necessary shelter and protection that it once could.

With these feelings in mind, I am working with domestic objects found in charity shops.  To me, the items found there represent the same feelings of abandonment and the passage of time that are associated with the houses. The abandoned charity shop items have gone from belonging to someone and being used to being stacked up with other pieces belonging to other people, left gathering dust just like the houses, they become anonymous.

Unlike these domestic objects that are made to last, clay in its natural unfired state is fragile and can be easily broken. In my work I am celebrating that fragility by using water as a means of breaking down my pieces gradually to explore these feelings of loss and the decay of the houses over time.
